Clay Walker Rides for His Cause in Houston

Clay Walker is bursting into 2014 with a bang, already crossing some finish lines off his list. On Feb. 1, Walker hosted his second annual Band Against MS Ride in Houston, Texas, joined by over a thousand eager riders.

The bicycle trek benefited Band Against MS (BAMS), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational material and support for those living with MS, as well as funding research that may one day lead to a cure. The charity, founded by Walker in 2003, came as a response to his own battle with MS and his goal to walk alongside those also fighting the disease. And if Saturday’s turnout is any indication, it looks like many others share his vision.

Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1996, Walker has lived twice as long as doctors predicted. Through his work with BAMS, he believes that some day soon the world will have a cure.

Walker’s mission may seem lofty, but the singer’s experience with MS thus far has made him up to the task.

“I lived in fear of dying for the first two years. And now I don’t have any fear at all,” Walker insists in an interview with Taste of Country. “It’s like right now, I wanna find a cure. I went from devastation over [possibly dying and leaving] my daughter to now, I’m the father of a 5-month-old son … it was a very big mountain to climb and I’m still climbing it. But I definitely feel like I can see the top now.”

Clay Walker has been a pioneering voice in country music for over 20 years, and doesn’t seem intent on letting up anytime soon. This year, he plans to release a new record and even has a small acting role under his belt from the period drama ‘Alone Yet Not Alone‘ Walker will also host his annual Clay Walker Charity Classic golf tournament at the famed Pebble Beach Resort in June.
