Texas A&M University-Texarkana will feature live musical theatre and film events as part of its Hispanic heritage celebration this month in Eagle Hall of the University Center on the Texarkana campus at 7101 University Ave. The events are free and open to the public.

On Tuesday, October 20, at 6PM there will be a chamber music theatre performance of "Tres Vidas,” an evening-length work for singing actress and chamber music trio Core Ensemble based on the lives of three legendary Latin American women – Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Salvadoran peasant activist Rufina Amaya and Argentine poet Alfonsina Storni. The music ranges from traditional Mexican folk and Argentine tango songs sung in Spanish to instrumental works by composers such as Astor Piazzolla and Osvaldo Golijov.

Following the performance, there will be an opportunity for dialogue with the actress and musicians. A reception will follow. The performance is sponsored by the A&M-Texarkana Student Life office and Multicultural Association.

There will be a screening of the film “Smuggled” on Thursday, Oct. 22, from 6PM to 8:30PM in Eagle Hall, with a lecture by award-winning writer/director Ramon Hamilton. At the conclusion of the lecture and film, there will be an opportunity for dialogue with the film director. A reception will follow.

The film and lecture are sponsored by the Program for Learning and Community Engagement (PLACE), a faculty-led program designed to create a community of learners comprising A&M-Texarkana students, faculty, staff and the community at large.

“We want the educational community and general public to be aware of the contributions of Hispanics to the general American culture and to women’s rights and activism by providing outstanding examples of visual and performing arts that are open to the entire community,” said Dr. LuzMary Rincon, associate professor of Spanish and Bilingual/ESL Education. “We hope everyone will want to attend and be a part of these exciting opportunities to explore Hispanic heritage and culture.”
