Jeff Gordon Wins a Rain Shortened Pennsylvania 400, Fan Killed by Lightning [VIDEO]

In a rain shortened Pennsylvania 400 it was Jeff Gordon for the win, and in the parking lot a man was killed and 9 others injured when lightning struck near their vehicles in the parking lot of the speedway.

Gordon celebrated his 41st birthday on Saturday, and Sunda,y after the race was called on lap 98 of the scheduled 160, Jeff claimed his 86th NASCAR victory.

Following Gordon in second was Kasey Kahne, Martin Truex Jr. in third, Brad Keselowski fourth, and Tony Stewart finished fifth.

AOL Sporting News reports that NASCAR Spokesperson David Higdon said,

We are deeply saddened that a fan has died and others were injured by lightning strikes following today’s race at Pocono, Our thoughts are with them as well as all those affected by this unfortunate accident.”

The National Weather Service issued a sever thunderstorm warning for the area at 4:12 p.m., but it was another half hour before the race was stopped for rain.  Immediately after the race was stopped a weather warning was announced on the track public address system.

Jeff Gordon said the rain and lightning was really bad as he walked from his car on pit road and believes he knows exactly which strike was the cause of the tragedy,

I’m pretty sure I know which one it was, We were walking down pit road, the umbrellas weren’t doing any good, there was a huge, huge crack from lightning. You could tell it was very close.”
