Good Tuesday, here are some stories making headlines today:
Texarkana Emergency Management Officials are warning of fire danger across the area today. The lack of rainfall over the past couple of months, combined with strong and gusty southerly winds and low afternoon relative humidities are combing to make the fire danger high. Winds gusting to 30 mph and humidity levels in the 30 percent range will contribute to the problem. As will dry pockets of grass and vegetation and timber fuels which have become volatile due to the drought conditions.
The Progress Texarkana Committee is meeting to talk about local deconomice development and to announce a local support group. The group is in favor of upcoming Texarkana, Texas beer/wine referendum. They will detail the latest at 11:00 am at the Marquee Sign at the West Park Shopping Center at 5205 West Park Boulevard (located next to the former Smokey Joe’s BBQ) in Texarkana, Texas. The meeting will be at 11:00 a.m.
Police in Southwest Arkansas say a 15 year old boy is being held in a juvenile dentention center in Texarkana after being charged with raping a girl at the Hope High School in Hempstead County. The girl told investigators she was raped last week after being forced into a school bathroom.
Cicely Shannon, a dynamic senio at Texas High School in Texarkana, has been selected as a member of the 2011 Class of Coca-Cola Scholars. Cicely was selected as a Finalist from more than 2,100 semifinalists for having demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and community involvement epitomized by past winners of this scholarship.
Shannon is one of 252 high school seniors selected nationwide to compete for a scholarship from the Coca-Cola Sholars Foundation. On April 14th, Shannon will travel to Atlanta, Georgia, the international headquarters of the Coca-Cola Company, to compete for 52 four year scholarships of $20,000 thousand dollars and 200 four-year scholarships of $10,000 thousand dollars.
