I had to work for a bit on Saturday so I wasn't able to make it right when the gates opened but about an hour later I arrived at the Wagons for Veterans 2024 fundraising event at the Four States Fairgrounds. Happily, there was still plenty of that delicious open fire and steel pot/Dutch oven food left to fill me up. Man, was it ever good.

It has been several years since I was able to make it to the event, every time it came back around something got in the way, this year the same thing almost happened again, but I managed to get there in time for a few quick tastings.

The first Wagons for Veterans I attended was held inside the horse barn, which couldn't possibly contain it now. A few years later it had moved out to the circle area around the fairgrounds, now the cooking portion of the event is taking up the entire center section of the fairgrounds, where it was a bit muddy this year. I wish I had thought to wear my muck boots.

I don't know how many wagons and cook teams they had, but it was a bunch. I saw some Scouts from Troop 8 out there showing off their Dutch oven cooking skills. They had some terrific stuff to bid on in the live auction as well.

It all benefits local Veterans right here in Texarkana and the surrounding area. The cause is great, the food is great, the company is great, and the deserts are ridiculous... in a good way.

A few thoughts for next year:

  • Get there earlier.
  • Bring some extra money for the live auction.
  • If it's been raining... muck boots.
