AI’s New Frontier: Texarkana Police Warn of Deceptive Phone Scams

We've all heard of fake news or deepfake news using AI. Well, we knew it was just a matter of time, but now Texarkana Police are warning us that AI is being used for phone scams.

Cybercriminals are getting sneakier and sneakier by the day, and this new scam is very sneaky. Downright mean and nasty.

According to the Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department's Facebook page, this is how it works: You get a text or a voice call from someone who will claim to be a 'high-ranking' U.S. government official.  They will sound very friendly and genuine. They will sound trustworthy and helpful, but watch out...it's all fake. That friendly voice was created by AI. That's right, that trustworthy voice is fake.

If you aren't careful, that friendly voice will gain your trust, and once they have your trust, they will encourage you to move the conversation to a different messaging app. They will send you a download link to click on to get the app. That is when it happens, the link is malicious software. Then, when you open the link, scammers have access to your phone and they can start stealing your data and personal information.

Here is What You Need to Do to Be Safe From AI Scam Calls

-If you get a call from a stranger, be alert and cautious, especially if they are getting friendly fast through text messages or phone calls. Scammers do this to gain your trust.

-Do Not click on any links from someone you do not know!

This Scam is being reported in the U.S. Remember, just because someone says they are a government official does not mean they are. It doesn't matter how nice they sound, they could be lying!

Remember to follow your gut if something seems strange, off or too good to be true, then chances are it is and it's a scam. Please let your family members know about this! Especially your elderly family members.
