Help Clean Historic Markers in Arkansas April 25–27
The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP) is inviting Arkansas residents to take part in National Historic Marker Weekend from April 25–27, 2025. This event encourages volunteers to help clean and care for historic markers across the state.
Churches, social groups, scouts, sports teams, individuals, you name it, anyone can get out and do this.
At one time this event was known as National Historic Marker Day, and was created by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation to promote community history and preservation. This year, the effort has been extended to an entire weekend.

According to the Historical Marker Database, who knew that was a thing, there are over 209,000 historic markers across the US, many of which have not received regular maintenance. The weekend program is aimed at restoring these important landmarks so they remain visible and meaningful to future generations.
“Arkansas Historic Markers are not only a financial investment, they’re a visible reminder of our shared history,” said AHPP Director Scott Kaufman. “Keeping them clean helps preserve the stories they tell and shows that we value Arkansas history.”
Volunteers can learn more about how and where to participate by visiting the AHPP website.
The AHPP is a division of Arkansas Heritage, which falls under the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism.
