Arkansas State Police Investigate Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Maumelle
The Maumelle Police Department has requested help from the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division (CID) to look into an officer-involved shooting that took place on Saturday, January 11, 2025, on Crystal Hill Road.
It took place around 2 PM when Maumelle Police officers were assisting Metropolitan Emergency Medical Service (MEMS) with a disturbance in the 10000 block of Crystal Hill Road. The officers decided to take 34-year-old Benjamin Prowell of Conway into custody. According to a press release, Prowell took out a knife which prompted officers to fire at the suspect.
Prowell was transported to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), where he was pronounced dead at approximately 4 PM.
Fortunately, no police officers were injured during the incident. With the police department's policy, the officers involved are now on administrative leave until it is determined if the shooting complies with Arkansas State Law.

The Arkansas State Crime Lab will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Prowell's death. The Criminal Investigation Department will submit its findings to the Pulaski County Prosecutor. Then it will be decided if the officers were within the state laws to shoot with deadly force.
This is an ongoing investigation.
