Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, the Perseids and the Moon Over Texas/Arkansas
Skywatchers are enjoying a great month of August 2025. Did you see that full moon Saturday night, August 9? It was mesmerizing; I was driving near Sealy, Texas, and had to pull over to take a few pictures of it. Between the moon, Venus, Jupiter's alignment, Saturn, and the Perseid meteor shower, this is lining up to be a great celestial week/month to keep your eyes... up.
I took that moon photo up there ⬆⬆⬆... Here's another one from Saturday:
The full moon, known in August as the Sturgeon Moon, is named after the fish. According to Space.com, the Sturgeon Moon, was also called the Red Moon by some Native American tribes.
Monday Night, August 11
Monday night's moon won't be full, but at 89%, that's still a very bright object in the sky. Around 10 PM tonight CDT, just below and to the left of the big, bright moon, Saturn will also be visible.
Monday Night into Wednesday Morning
Venus and Jupiter will be in close proximity to each other in the wee hours of the morning before sunrise on Wednesday. Look to the Eastern sky, these two planets in our solar system will be bright and not blinking. They're not really close together at all, of course, this is just from our visual perspective.
Tuesday Night into Wednesday Morning
We are also reaching the peak of the Perseids meteor shower this week. Of course, we are, while dealing with the 86% brightness of a waning moon to boot. In the best, darkest place you can find, you should be able to see up to 100 meteors per hour. Depending on cloud cover and how bright that big beautiful moon is.
Happy Skywatching this week, be sure you stay up to date with what to look for in the night sky at Space.com.
