WWII Veteran Grave Marker Found Under Texarkana Street

A Mystery Beneath Falvey Street in Texarkana

Talk about a mystery! The Texarkana Texas Police Department recently shared a fascinating story on Facebook about a discovery made by a City Street Department crew during a repaving project on Falvey Street. While working beneath the roadway, the crew uncovered a grave marker belonging to Dial Amos, a World War II Army veteran.

Needless to say, it left everyone asking the same question: How the heck did a grave marker end up buried under a city street?

A Personal Mission in Locating Family

According to the police department's post, the street crew members did some online research and learned a little about Amos, but then hit a dead end.

That's when Assistant Police Chief Shawn Fitzgerald stepped in.

Because his own grandfather served in World War II, Fitzgerald said the search became a little more personal. After some detective work, he located a man in Fort Worth he believed was Amos' grandson, so he emailed him. Then, just a few minutes later, Fitzgerald's phone rang, and it was Dial Amos' grandson.

One Mystery Solved, One Still Remaining

The grandson was reportedly just as surprised as everyone else to learn his grandfather's grave marker had been found beneath a street in Texarkana.

Fitzgerald then worked with a funeral home in Daingerfield to help get the marker returned to where it belongs.

As for how it ended up under Falvey Street in the first place? Nobody seems to know. How long had it been missing? Was it accidentally moved during construction at some point? Or was it a damaged headstone from the start and was thrown out or sold to a company that does backfilling and excavation?

Whatever the explanation, it's a wild story. So, one mystery has been solved, but now we have so many more questions.

The ceremony was very well done and featured short speeches from both Texarkana Mayors and Fire Chiefs. I know many in attendance weren't even alive when the attack happened 25 years ago, but for those of us who remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when the planes struck the towers, it was an amazing thing to see and touch.
