Brennley Brown Sings Countrified Joni Mitchell Classic on ‘The Voice’ [Watch]
Brennley Brown may have delivered her best performance yet during the Top 11 round of The Voice with her rendition of "River" by Joni Mitchell.
Coach Gwen Stefani encouraged Brown to divert from her country roots and take on the song, believing that its emotional side ties into the country genre. In rehearsal, the two decide to add a three-part harmony in the background to make the performance a little more in her country comfort zone.
After a haunting violin opened the number, Brown graced the stage with a bit of an edgier look, complete with long, pin-straight hair and a floor-length silver dress. Per usual, Brown's sweet voice filled the room as she proved she can deliver emotion just as believably as fellow contestant Lauren Duski. The Mitchell classic also offered the opportunity for the young singer to demonstrate her impressive range, hitting a sweet spot when she went for the high notes. "River" may have offered Brown her most poignant performance yet, doing Mitchell proud with her rendition of the song that was a solid choice for the young singer, as it showed off the total range of her voice.
Coaches Stefani and Alicia Keys even got to their feet to applaud her.
"I think that is beautiful," Adam Levine told Brown, admitting that she managed to turn it into a country song while honoring the original version and bringing in a dose of "fresh originality."
Stefani, her coach, was over the moon. "I am so excited about you," she raved, saying how amazed she is that Brown is able to channel such a deep lyric at a young age, before declaring that she's certain America will vote her through to the Top 10. We'll see if she's right on Tuesday (May 2) when the finalists are announced.
