In the State of Texas, you can cross the Party lines during the Primary and cross back during the General Election held on November 3. You can only pick one side in the Primary, BallotPedia.com explains it like this:
Texas primaries are open, meaning a voter does not have to be registered as a member of a party to participate in its primary. Voters in Texas must sign a pledge when voting declaring that they will not vote in another party's primary in the same year.
In other words, you only get one shot in the Primary, either the Democrat ticket or Republican. If you choose to vote in a different party's Primary election to try and influence the outcome you risk losing someone in your party's Primary that you would like to see win.
Ain't politics a hoot?
