Free Tree Seedling Giveaway Set for Feb. 18 in New Boston
The Bowie County Master Gardeners, in conjunction with the Texas A&M Forest Service will be holding a free tree seedling giveaway beginning at 9 AM on Saturday, February 18, 2023.
Tree Giveaway
Trees will be handed out at the Trailhead Park Pavilion (200 South Ellis Street) in New Boston on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 9:00 AM and lasting until all trees have been distributed.
It is anticipated that we will have 400 total seedlings to distribute.
Scheduled Varieties for Giveaway
Sawtooth Oak
Tends to grow pretty fast and begins to bear in 4-6 years into a very productive acorn crop that is excellent for deer and wildlife.
Allegheny Chinkapin
Will adapt to most soil textures, except heavy clays, and grows best in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soils.
Bald Cypress
Tends to prevent erosion of river banks by soaking up excess water because of their huge roots this helps prevent pollutants from spreading in the water. Bald Cypress is very important to wildlife in the area due to its holding soil in place.
During the tree giveaway participants must stay in their cars at all times a total of 6 seedlings will be provided for up to 4 persons per vehicle.
