Galveston’s Waters Turn a Mesmerizing Blue: Rare Texas Treat
It may be time for a road trip to Galveston, where the murky brown waters of the Texas Gulf Coast have transformed to a deeper blue color.
Why Has the Water Turned Blue in Galveston Beach?
Every time it happens, people are mesmerized because that's just something you don't see on the Texas Gulf Coast very often. According to Hal “Hurricane” Needham, an extreme weather and data scientist in Galveston, one of the main reasons for the color change is seasonal current patterns. Needham tells the Houston Chronicle, the sediment in the water is carried by currents that travel a long distance, bringing in saltier, bluer water from the South. Combined with lighter winds, the water is less choppy and calmer, turning it a much deeper blue color.
Scientists believe the sediment falls to the bottom of the ocean, allowing the water to change color, especially during the latter part of August and September. Enjoy it while you can because when it happens periodically, it only lasts for a couple of weeks or more.

Is the Water Safe to Swim In?
Yes, it is.
If you grew up around Galveston, then you know the water has always been a murky brown color. If you want bluer water, you have to travel further down the Gulf to Orange Beach, Alabama.
