Sam Houston Visitors Center in Huntsville Texas – Worth the Stop
If you have travelled around the Great State of Texas much, then you have no doubt seen the giant statue of the Father of Texas, Sam Houston just south of Hunstville on Interstate-45. Like most folks chugging along that route bewteen Dallas and Houston, I too, have seen it many times, taken pictures while flying by at 75MPH. Sadley, even though I worked in Hunstville for a while 30+ years ago... (Yikes, sorry I did that math in my head)... I've never been to the visitors center before. I have now, and yes, it is worth the stop.
The visitors center is behind Big Sam in the shade of the tall trees. for the vast majority of those motoring along I-45, the statue would not be your final destination, but it is a great stop along the way.
The Sam Houston visitors Center and Statue opened in October of 1994, and as impressive as Sam Houston is from the road passing by, he's even more impressive up close and personal.
- Hight: 67 feet
- Build time: About 1.5 years
- Materials: 30 tons of concrete with a steel frame
- Base: 10' tall Texas Sunset Granite
The name of the sculpture by Hunstville native David Adickes, is A Tribute To Courage, but most simply call it, Big Sam.
The next time you have 30 minutes to an hour on your trip between Houston and Big D, I highly reccommend stopping in to eat a picnic lunch in the shade, learn a little Texas history and grab a selfie or two with Big Sam.
