Don't panic, stay calm. This is something that your mailman may have done and it's not malicious or dangerous it's actually a good thing.

During the summer months, wasps and hornets are known to set up nests in mailboxes. Believe it or not, a great trick to keep them from setting up house in your mailbox is a scented dryer sheet.

If you think about how many mailboxes a postal worker puts their hand in every day, there is a good chance they have been stung by a wasp or hornet.

This technique will only prevent the critters from making a nest it won't make them leave if they are already there. And you need to use scented dryer sheets.

A mail carrier a couple of years ago actually posted this little tidbit of information on Reddit. One of the reply comments on the forum is from a restaurant worker who said they put the dryer sheets under tablecloths for tables outside to keep the hornets away.
