As the price for gasoline at the pumps continues to rise its beginning to affect the demand.  Reports from government and industry groups show motorists have been cutting back on the amount of gas they are putting into their vehicles.

That could signal trouble for the economy since Americans typically cut spending on other activities before they do less driving. Gasoline now tops $4 a gallon in 13 states and the District of Columbia.

The Labor Department says more people applied for unemployment benefits last week. The number rose for the 3rd time in the last 4 weeks with applications rising by 43,000 to 474,000. The four week average, which is less volatile also rose for the fourth straight week to 431,250.

Applications near 375,000 are typically consistent with sustainable job growth. Weekly applications peaked during the height of the recession at 659,000.

The Texarkana Arkansas City Beautiful Commission is hosting a Volunteer Cleanup Day this Saturday May 7th. The day will begin at 8 am at the front of the Downtown Post Office and conclude at 11 am.

Volunteers will be provided trash bags but are asked to bring other supplies they want to use. You can form your own team or a location will be provided to the team you join up with. The American Red Cross will be providing hydration and assistance with First Aid needs. Dumpsters will be placed in strategic areas as well as the city barn on Dudley Avenue will be open the same day. For more information you can call (870) 779-4971.
