Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe has named Deborah Knox of Mountain Home as a special associate Justiceof the state Supreme Court in a case challenging construction of a coal-fired power plant at Fulton, just east of Texarkana in Hempstead County.

Knox takes the place of Justice Courtney Henry, who has stepped aside from the matter. Southwestern Electric Power Company is constructing the plant and is being oppossed in court by a group representing a hunting club as well as several environmental groups.

The Arkansas Legistlature has given final approval to a proposal to redraw the state's congressional districts. The measure passed on a 24-9 vote in the senate after lawmakers hurried to fix an error that would have left some 175 voters stranded in a district where they did not belong. The proposal that passed through both the state senate and house will split up 5 counties between congressional districts. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe has said that he will sign the bill into law.

Two representatives from Texarkana College recently attended a  U.S. Department of Education Community College Regional Summit. Board of Trustees Molly Beth Malcolm and Dean of Workforce Education Dr. Mannie Hall attended the one day summit in Houston, Texas on behalf of the local college.

At the summit, participants discussed how each organization represented could support local community college efforts to meet the President's 2020 goal for the United States to once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. The summit also allowed participants to identify local, state and national recommendations for increasing community college competition to meet the 2020 goal.

The Texas Rangers lost to Detroit last night to fall to 9-2 on the season. The Rangers also lost outfielder and MVP Josh Hamilton for 6 to 8 weeks after he broke a bone in his right arm while attempting to slide head first into home plate after tagging up on a foul out near the 3rd base dugout.
