I am seeing an awful lot of red noses these days, itchy, watery eyes, and some coughing and wheezing going on as well. What's in the Texarkana, East Texas, and Southwest Arkansas Fall air that's causing all the fuss? And how long will it stay that way?

Not Too Bad Today, But... (Disclaimer)

Funny thing is, as I'm writing this, the ragweed and pollen counts for the Texarkana area are medium and pretty low today, respectively. So, maybe today is a good day for you, maybe not. Just know that when it's getting you this time of year, it's most likely ragweed.

Reminder: I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on the radio, and this is not medical advice. This is me just griping out loud and a few ideas on how to control exposure to airborne allergens.

What Triggers Relief?

This is the bad news: Cold weather, as in below-freezing weather, is what makes the ragweed go away.  At least for a short time, until we get into the Spring allergy season, and I don't even want to think about that yet.

When Will The Cold Weather Get Here?

Great question. Forecasters generally think this mild weather will be with us through November at least. Not exactly shocking news to anyone who's lived around here for a while. Let's just hope we're not still in shorts on Christmas Day.

How To Fight It?

According to AccuWeather.com and others (meaning me):

  1. Limit outdoor activities on the bad days.
  2. Keep your windows and doors closed.
  3. Use high-quality air filters.
  4. Consider investing in air purifiers.
  5. Start your allergy medication early on the bad days.
  6. Change clothes after being outside for long periods.
  7. Shower before bed.

Happy Halloween, coming up soon... Happy Thanksgiving and of course, Merry Christmas! I can't believe I said that already.

Take your meds and try not to sneeze on the turkey.
