Almost two years after 20 campers were killed in a flash flood, Albert Pike is starting to (permanently) reopen portions of the recreational area to the public.

After the flood, some of the areas were reopened, but were closed in October 2010 and have remained closed since while hazards were removed. The swim area has been cleared of debris, the Loop B bathhouse has been repaired, hazard signs have been posted and the bank near east beach (which was flood eroded) has been fenced off.

Loops A and B as well as East Beach will be open to the public for day use only between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily.

I'm glad to see them reopening portions of Albert Pike and I hope they will have this beautiful recreation area completely restored and open to day and overnight use sometime in the near future. None of us will ever forget the tragedy that occurred there, but Albert Pike is a place all of us who live in this area have visited at some point in our lives and future generations should be able to enjoy it as well.
