Arkansas is nationally recognized as being the Natural State but for years it was known as the Wonder State for its abundance of lakes, mountains, bluffs, caverns, and yes.

The answer is simple, Annona Chalk. This ecological, historic, and archeological site has been around since the Cretaceous age and is a natural phenomenon.  It just so happens that White Cliffs Natural Area is the largest spot of chalk woodlands in Arkansas. This rare and unusual occurrence is reminiscent of the Edwards Plateau in central west Texas. Annona Chalk is primarily used to make cement so when you venture out on this wonderous trail you expect to get the walk chalk on the bottom of your hiking boots.

However, there is a paved trail that leads to the top of the overlook that rises some 100 feet overlooking the river.  At this vantage point, you are able to get a really great view of the white cliff area. There is also an array of historical ruins of what was once buildings in this area as well

The 1.85-mile loop trail is pretty amazing in itself, as it winds around to the top with lots of wooded rugged terrain, creeks, ravines, a gravel pit, palmetto trees, and Ashe’s juniper trees along the way. For a moment, you may think you are on the Gulf Coast instead of Arkansas, but it is called the Gulf Coastal Palins for a reason, according to the website Right Kind of Lost.

So, if you love to hike and you are looking for a one-of-kind adventure White Cliffs Recreation Area is the place to go in the wonderous natural state of Arkansas.
