Texas families can now apply for the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) program, a new initiative that gives parents more flexibility in choosing educational options for their children.

The program is administered by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts under Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock and was established through Senate Bill 2, signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott in May. TEFA allows eligible students to use state funding for approved educational expenses, including private school tuition, instructional materials, and certain educational therapies.

$1 Billion Program Launches for 2026–2027 Texas School Year

The Texas Education Freedom Account program is funded at $1 billion for the 2026–2027 school year, making it the largest school choice program to launch at its inception in the nation. State leaders say the program is designed to place parents at the center of education decisions while expanding options for students across Texas.

Governor Abbott said the program gives families the ability to select the learning environment that best fits their child’s needs and supports student success statewide.

Application Window Open Through March 17

Online applications for TEFA are being accepted from February 4 through March 17, 2026. All Texas children are eligible to apply if they reside in Texas and are U.S. citizens or were lawfully admitted into the United States.

The program is not first-come, first-served, and families may apply at any point during the application window without affecting their chances of receiving funding.

Families are encouraged to review the required documentation before applying.

When you log in to fill out the application, parents must first create the account through the portal. The landing page is called "Oddyssey", don't let the name confuse you, you made it to the correct page. Here is that link.
