Lone Star State Leads Nation in New Year’s Day Hikes, Again!
State parks across the country hosted a special First Day Hike in honor of America's 250th Birthday this year. Texans and visitors hit the trails in big numbers for the 4th year in a row. Once again, Texas State Parks set new records during this year's event.
On January 1, a total of 86 parks hosted 181 guided hikes, with 2,835 participants collectively logging an impressive 28,154 miles.

Those numbers show record highs for sites, events, participants, and miles hiked, continuing a streak that’s now four years strong. Compared to last year, participation jumped by more than 3,000 people, with nearly 10,000 additional miles traveled. Texas also led the nation in First Day Hike participation.

Those numbers don't even count the people who were at the parks hiking on their own without the guided hike leaders. I know because that is what I was doing with a group of friends at Lake Bob Sandlin. We missed the guided hike, so we went out on our own. We came across others who were doing the same thing.
Texans Take the Lead Outdoors
Texas State Parks Director Rodney Franklin credited the beautiful weather and the growing tradition of families spending New Year’s Day outdoors. The campground we stayed at had a great turnout of campers for the new year. It's great to see others enjoying winter camping as much as we do.
