This Arkansas Town is the Absolute Hottest Place to Live
The summer solstice is tomorrow June 20, marking the first official day of the summer season it also represents the longest day and shortest night of the year.
Hottest Place in Arkansas
Just because the summer solstice is the longest day doesn't always mean it will be the hottest, although temperatures have steadily risen nationwide. The hottest days are normally days after the summer solstice but don't tell that to the many Americans already experiencing record heat in some parts of the United States.
We get some pretty hot days in the South and though we never get used to the sweltering heat we've learned to live with it.
I live in Arkansas and have often wondered where Arkansas's hottest place is. Of all the places in Arkansas Helena-West Helena located in the eastern Delta region is the hottest town on an average basis. Are you sure this is not Hell-ena?
The average temperatures in July and August range from 95-100 degrees with lows during the night in the mid-70s factor in the town that sits along the Mississippi River the humidity can get quite sticky and dangerous pushing the heat index above 105 degrees or more for days on end.
The number of days with a temperature above 100 degrees is 11 days according to the latest statistics. The maximum daily temperature is 94 degrees on average in Helena-West Helena. The good news there are plenty of outdoor recreation activities at Crowley's Ridge State Park along with lakes to keep you cool during those long summer months according to A-Z Animals.
Hottest Place in the World
It could be worse, the hottest place on earth is Death Valley in the California Desert where the the Furnace Creek area has gotten up to 134.1 degrees with an average temperature of 113 degrees. With temperatures already soaring this early there's a good chance those records could be broken this summer. The human body can only effectively maintain between 104 and 122 degrees anything higher can be very dangerous and deadly.
Summer Solstice Facts
Now back to the summer solstice what makes it so special? Other than the longest day of the year it is when the sun is at its highest point in the sky and the earth is tilted toward the sun which contributes to the longest day of sunlight. It also means that after the solstice the days will become shorter each day heading into the fall season. Now that's a bummer.
The summer solstice arrives at 4:51 a.m. Eastern time.
