Arkansas’ Petit Jean State Park Celebrates Historic Lodge Renovation & New Climbing Route
Have you ever been to Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas? It is Arkansas's very first state park and was established back in 1923. The park has seen several major upgrades in recent years, including these latest renovations and additions. Recently they reopening of the newly renovated historic Mather Lodge, expanded outdoor recreation opportunities, and the unveiling of an Arkansas 250 historical marker recognizing the park's important place in state history.
One of the biggest additions is the Petit Jean Via Ferrata. If you are wondering what a Via Ferrata is, you aren't alone. I found out it is a mountain climbing route that uses steel cables, iron rungs, ladders, and bridges that are anchored into the rock. These make it so that climbers don't need all the skills of a real rock climber. But can still enjoy the excitement and challenges of rock climbing.
This new climbing experience in Arkansas is offered in partnership with Frontier Climbing Company. This is the first via ferrata located within a state park in the United States. Now people now can get a new perspective on the rugged landscape of Petit Jean State Park.

They are also working on a new mountain biking experience that will be opening as part of the Arkansas Monument Trails system. Developed in partnership with the Arkansas Parks and Recreation Foundation, the trail network will offer riding opportunities for all skill levels of mountain biking.
Renovations to Mather Lodge are a welcome sight. Governor Sanders was present for the reopening and said it best...
Just because tourists want the rustic charm of a lodge built in the 30s, doesn't mean they necessarily want the same amenities of 100 years ago. And just because Petit Jean features some of the best outdoor beauty in Arkansas doesn't mean it will get seen or used if we don't invest in it.

I love the fact that they are expanding the activities of the park and renovating the Historic Mather Lodge and the cabins that are available to rent. My husband and I took his brother and wife to Petit Jean Park one year for New Year's Eve. It is beautiful. There is a trail you can walk down to and see a gorgeous waterfall. You can also take a hike to the top of the mountain and see the grave of Petit Jean, whom the park is named.
I'm pretty adventurous, but this Via Ferrata might have me thinking twice. But then again...it does look fun! Check out the pictures below courtesy of The Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism.
