According to new studies, the belief that eating lots of fried food causes heart problems is a myth.

More and more research indicates it's the type of oil that's used and whether the oil has been re-used or not that determines long-term heart risk.

A new study in the British Medical Journal studied 40,000 people in Spain for over 15 years and found no direct correlation between fried foods and heart disease. Researchers say other studies have found similar results.

However, researchers do point out that there are other health problems known to be caused by eating fried foods including obesity and high blood pressure.

The best oils to use? According to researchers using olive or sunflower oils (which more and more Europeans are using) are best. They also point out it's best not to re-use the oil.
