Several Arkansas Swimming Beaches Closed Due to E. Coli

With Memorial Day Weekend upon us, this is not the news people want to hear.  There were several swimming beaches in Arkansas that were closed over the weekend by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers because the water tested positive for E. Coli. 

The swimming beaches were all located at Beaver Lake and the E. Coli levels were higher than acceptable. The beaches that closed are:

Dam Site Island
Hickory Creek
Horseshoe Bend Campground
Horseshoe Bend Day Use Area
Indian Creek
Lost Bridge South
Prairie Creek
Rocky Branch Campground
Rocky Branch Day Use
War Eagle

The U.S Army Corps of Engineers at the Little Rock District posted on their Facebook page,

USACE has posted signs indicating high bacteria levels at the swim beaches. Park rangers will retest May 20 and 21 and will reopen the beaches when test results indicate bacteria levels are within an acceptable range.

There is routine testing of Arkansas' swim beaches. Two beaches are still open: Lost Bridge North and the Dam Site Day Use Area.

Hopefully, the levels will return to normal by the time the holiday weekend starts.

The Corps of Engineers has had to close these beaches and others across the state off and on throughout the summer in the past few years.
