Arkansas State Police are serious about people driving safely, and starting on April 7 through April 14, they will be implementing a new statewide high-visibility enforcement effort on distracted driving.

Distracted Driving is the primary cause of most deaths and injuries from car accidents. When you are distracted, your focus is off the road, which affects your judgment and reaction time.

What does this mean? One of the biggest forms of distracted driving is with our phones. This means that Arkansas State Police will be watching for drivers who are texting while driving. They are reminding everyone to Put The Phone Away or Pay.

Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Colonel Mike Hagar said in a press release,

Drivers will see increased law enforcement efforts, as officers will be stopping and ticketing anyone who is caught texting and driving. If you text and drive, you will pay.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,308 people died in 2022 from distracted driving-related car accidents and close to 290,000 people were injured. Please remember, if they see you texting, they will pull you over and they will give you a ticket.

Set Your Phone to Driving Mode for No Distractions

It's easy to put down the phone. Our phones now come with a Driving mode you can turn on so it will not ring or notify you about a text. It will instead text message the person and say you can't answer right now because you are driving. Then all you need to do is pull over somewhere and call or text back or wait til you get to your destination.

My theory is, if it's important, they will leave you a message and you can always call or text them back when you are not driving.

For iPhones, go to Settings and then go to Focus and you will see the driving mode.

For  Android phones, go to Settings and then Google, then to Personal Safety and you will see Silence notifications while driving.

Enabling this on your phone could save you from a ticket and, even worse, an accident.
