As we all keep an eye on forecasts calling for winter weather Friday and into the weekend, the Arkansas State Police (ASP) are encouraging everyone to stay off the roads when freezing rain, snow, and freezing temperatures make travel unsafe. Staying home whenever possible helps reduce crashes, protects first responders, and allows road crews to do their jobs safely.

Tips for Those Who Must Travel in Icy Conditions in Arkansas

For those who must be on the road, ASP reminds drivers to slow down and take extra precautions. You should reduce speed, avoid sudden steering or braking, and increase the distance between vehicles. You are also urged to begin slowing much earlier than usual when approaching intersections, bridges, and exit ramps. These areas tend to freeze first and will be slippery.

Be Prepared Before You Venture Out Driving in Arkansas During a Winter Storm

ASP also encourages drivers to prepare an emergency kit before traveling. The last thing you want is to be stranded in your car without warmth or food.  Be sure to pack things like extra clothing, blankets, water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a phone charger, an ice scraper, and basic first-aid supplies.
