Bowie County is now under a burn ban following a declaration of disaster issued by County Judge Bobby Howell due to dangerous wildfire conditions.

According to the order, dry weather, windy conditions, and a significant lack of normal rainfall have created an increased risk of wildfires across the county. The declaration was signed on December 29, 2025, and the burn ban will remain in effect for seven days from the date of entry.

Does This Bowie County-Wide Ban Include Fireworks?

The emergency order applies to all unincorporated areas of Bowie County:

  • It prohibits all outdoor burning.
  • The ban includes the use of all fireworks and sparklers, which officials say could easily ignite grass or brush fires under current conditions.

What About Outdoor Cookouts?

Some limited exceptions are allowed. Burning activities related to public health and safety may be conducted if authorized by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Outdoor cooking is also permitted, but only when using enclosed grills or pits designed to contain flames and embers.

Violations Could Be Very Costly!

County officials emphasized that violations of the burn ban are considered a misdemeanor offense. Anyone found violating the order could face a fine of up to $500.

The order may be enforced by any duly commissioned peace officer within the county.

Residents are urged to use caution, avoid activities that could spark fires, and remain aware of changing weather conditions during the ban period. Officials said the burn ban is intended to protect lives, property, and emergency responders during heightened wildfire danger.

The declaration is signed by Judge Bobby Howell and attested by Bowie County Clerk Tina Petty.
