Can You Believe There are WWII Bunkers in Arkansas?
With all the talk about nuclear war, these days and possibly WWIII which no one likes to think about it. Did you know that Arkansas is the home of the last 5 abandoned WWII munition bunkers in the state?
World War II Bunkers
You may be surprised that the bunkers are on beautiful Lake Willastein Park in Maumelle, Arkansas, a 100-acre park where families get together for fun and year-long events.
There were 21 bunkers built in Arkansas between 1941 and 1942 of those 21 bunkers as of 2022, only 5 remain today according to THV11, and were primarily used for making and storing explosive munitions for our military soldiers.
Bunker #4 is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Not many people knew about these bunkers until Maumelle started growing in the 1980s.
Maumelle Veterans Memorial
One of the park's highlights is the Maumelle Veterans Memorial which pays tribute to the fallen heroes, veterans, and armed services. Guests, friends, or family members can purchase a commemorative brick with a loved one on it to be placed in the Pathway of Honor. Get details here.
Besides the bunkers, the park has many hiking trails, picnic tables, playgrounds, a swinging bridge, BBQ pits, and a fishing pier.
There are gazebos, an amphitheater, and pavilions nearby for sitting, relaxing, and gathering for a family reunion or picnic
Lake Willastein Park also offers other recreational activities for its guests such as canoeing, kayaking, and boating.
So, if you are a history buff you will love seeing a part of American history and who knows you might just enjoy a day at Lake Willastein Park where our military is remembered every day not just on Veterans Day.
