I had a chance to be a volunteer at this wonderful ranch that is doing great things to help children with social and mental disabilities. Watching the children laugh and smile as they rode their horse was well worth the time. WJ Runnin' Ranch is always looking for volunteers, so I highly encourage anyone to to take a few hours out of your day to do something special for these kids just as Collin is doing. Please call Sam Clem at 903-838-3223 for more information.
The minimum age to participate in this program is 4 years of age. To sign up as a monthly donor of any amount, please visit their website.
The Main Purpose
Runnin' WJ Ranch main purpose is to teach riding skills to young children with physical, cognitive or emotional disabilities. Physically the rider develops core muscle strength, balance, and posture through the motion of the horse. Horseback riding also develops gross and fine motor control and promotes coordination. Mentally, horseback riding increases concentration, improves sequential thought processing and develops spatial awareness. Emotionally, horseback riding provides an opportunity for riders to bond with the horse, their instructor and their volunteers. This helps develop trust and reinforces appropriate behaviors. Socially, horseback riding nurtures a positive self-image and self-confidence as riding skills are learned.
