Do You Remember Your First Car?
A few week ago I ran across an article on the website CarGurus.com and the talk was about the most popular brand cars and owning your very first car as a youngster. Yours might have been a hand me down or a new car, but whatever the case, it got me thinking about my very first car.
It was a 1967 Chevrolet Bel-Air edition my Uncle Fred sold to me, if I remember correctly, for around $600. It was in great condition and was a gold/brown in color with a white top, basically two tone. It had everything I needed, a working radio, automatic, and the interior was in great shape. It was a well maintained car, but that's the way my uncle kept all his cars. The only thing I did was put some wide tires and chrome wheels with baby moons on the car because I was young and wanted to be cool. And for those who don't know what baby moons are, it isn't babies mooning. Look it up! I loved this car because it got me from point A to point B and to high school everyday. It wasn't until after I graduated that I wanted something else, so I sold it. I wish to this day I would have held on to it because it would be considered a vintage classic car today. But when your young you just don't think about those things and that far into the future.
Here's an old photograph of me standing next to my car getting ready for the prom. Try not to laugh to hard.
According to a recent survey, 83 percent of Americans had a used car as their first vehicle and 23 percent of teenagers will most likely get a used car from a relative or family member. The most popular car was a Chevy for millennial's and a Ford, if you were born before 1980. The rest were a Honda, Nissan, and a Toyota. Over half of the drivers surveyed got their first set of wheels before they turned 18 years old.
If you were born between 1960 and 1980 it was very likely you owned a Ford, Chevy, Pontiac, Dodge or Toyota. The baby boomers generation most likely settled for Toyota, Chevy, Volkswagen, Plymouth or Ford.
So, to end this story. What was your first car?
