Egg prices continue to rise in the United States and have hit a record high after government data was released on Wednesday. Texarkana residents are feeling the pinch at the grocery store.

Average Price For a Dozen Eggs

According to the consumer price index, the average price for a dozen Grade A eggs reached $4.95 in January beating its previous record of $4.82 two years ago.

With the ongoing bird flu outbreak with no end in sight any time soon, consumers should prepare themselves for price increases to continue. Expect to pay even more for specialty eggs such as organic, cage-free, or brand name.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts egg prices will go up by 20 percent this year in most cities in the U.S. One of the bigger problems is that some stores may already be sold out or don't have enough eggs to keep the shelves stocked.

In some cases, grocery stores are posting signs that inform customers that only a limited number of cartons will be sold.

With Easter fast approaching eggs are especially popular for boiling and coloring but I have a feeling it may be just a little too expensive to do that this year. Yesterday, I was at a Dollar General Store in Texarkana and noticed their price for a dozen large eggs was $6.50. I overheard the customer tell someone if prices get any higher she will just quit buying them altogether.
