Lady in Black: Heartbreaking Ghost Story Haunting a Small Arkansas Town
This is the time of the year when you hear a lot about spooky places to visit or haunted ghost stories in a small town in Arkansas. Every city in America has that one story that reveals a ghostly tale you may have heard about or not.
I admit, this is my first time hearing about the Lady in Black, 60 minutes away from Texarkana in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. This small town in central Arkansas is home to two colleges, Henderson State University and Ouachita Baptist University.
According to Fun in Arkansas, the Lady in Black is about a young woman who supposedly still wanders the campus and halls looking for her long-lost love. Students from both schools have heard variations of the story that dates back to the 1920s.

It centers around a Henderson football player named Joshua, who fell in love with a freshman named Jane at their rival school, Ouachita Baptist University. As time went on, Joshua's friends didn't approve of their blossoming relationship because they thought she was a nerd.
His friends told him If you don't break up with her, we will not have anything to do with you. Upon hearing this, Joshua gave in to peer pressure and dumped Jane right before homecoming, and began dating another girl from his school.
Jane was so devastated and heartbroken that she put on a black dress with a veil and threw herself off a cliff into the murky Ouachita River. From that day forward, it's believed she's still seen roaming the campuses and dorms during homecoming week, wearing that black dress and veil, mourning and looking for her lost love.

Some students at both universities have experienced the ghostly apparition late at night or heard footsteps that can't be explained. This story goes back generations, but the mystery remains: is it folklore or just another Urban Legend?
