Icy road conditions are already being reported to the west of us over in Sulpher Springs and Mt Vernon, and it's slowly moving in our direction. Will it get all the way to Texarkana, that's the big question. One thing is for sure though, you do not want to go to Dallas along the I-30 corridor for the next 36 to 48 hours at least. Don't do it.

TxDot has sent us notification that they are doing everything they can to prepare the Ark-La-Tex highways for the upcoming mess. TxDOT crews in Bowie, Cass, Camp, Marion, Morris, Titus, and Upshur Counties began pretreating many roads and bridges with brine today.

The state crews are focusing on pretreating the most highly traveled roadways, which include Interstate 30 and U.S. highways, along with bridges and overpasses. TxDOT says they will be staffed 24 hours a day through at least Wednesday, or until there is no longer a threat of winter weather.

If you do have to travel in the winter weather, you are asked to keep a safe traveling distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front you and be on the lookout for mobile convoys spreading brine on the roadways. Brine is a solution consisting of salt and water designed to prevent ice and snow from sticking to surfaces.

TxDOT is urging motorists to stay home if possible. If travel is necessary, drivers are advised to buckle up, stay alert and slow down. You should allow for at least three times more space than usual between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Be sure before you go, visit DriveTexas.org or call 1-800-452-9292 for around-the-clock updates on highway conditions.
