12-Hour SWAT Standoff in Ouachita County Ends With Man In Custody
A 47-year-old Stephens, Arkansas, man is in custody following a tense 12-hour standoff with law enforcement that ended early Tuesday, August 5, without any officers injured.
According to the Arkansas State Police (ASP), the incident began around 3:30 PM Monday when the Ouachita County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a disturbance on County Road 105. Police said Daniel Owens barricaded himself inside a residence after allegedly threatening a family member with a gun.
The El Dorado Police Department SWAT team was called in to assist. During the standoff, Owens reportedly fired at a police drone used for surveillance. As the situation escalated, the Arkansas State Police SWAT team also responded around 6:30 PM.
Officers say Owens fired multiple rounds throughout the night, striking an ASP Bearcat armored vehicle. Despite repeated attempts to negotiate and the use of a robotic device to communicate, Owens remained uncooperative and continued shooting at officers, prompting them to return fire.
Eventually, ASP SWAT breached the home and took Owens into custody. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for minor, non-gunshot-related injuries.
Once released, Owens will be booked into the Ouachita County Detention Center. He faces charges of Aggravated Assault and Attempted Capital Murder.
As always, all persons mentioned in these reports are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This incident remains under investigation.
