Texarkana Backs Red River Army Depot Amid Federal Cutback Concerns
The City of Texarkana, Texas has passed a resolution urging Congress and the U.S. Department of Defense to support the Red River Army Depot (RRAD), citing concerns over possible federal workload cuts that could threaten its future.
RRAD is a key military installation responsible for repairing and maintaining tactical vehicles for the U.S. Army and other military partners. The Depot plays a crucial role in national defense and operates without annual congressional funding, generating its own revenue through services provided.
Mayor Bob Bruggeman said the depot’s impact stretches far beyond the military.
“The Red River Army Depot is not only crucial to our national security, but it also drives our regional economy,” Bruggeman said.
According to the Texas Comptroller’s Office, RRAD has a $1.6 billion annual economic impact across Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. Any downsizing could severely affect thousands of workers, families, and businesses in the Four States Region.
In a show of regional support, nearby cities, including Wake Village, Nash, and New Boston, along with Bowie County, are all considering similar resolutions.
Texarkana’s resolution calls on congressional representatives from all four states to take action to protect RRAD’s mission and workforce. It also urges the Department of Defense to recognize the depot’s efficient, self-sustaining model as a standard for military operations.
City officials say preserving RRAD isn’t just about economics, it’s about readiness, security, and protecting the community’s future.
