Good news for Texarkana! Kidtopia, located at 201 Oak Street, and the Southwest Center on West 7th Street are about to get some major upgrades, thanks to the City of Texarkana, Texas Parks and Recreation.

Kidtopia - Downtown Texarkana

Design and construction phases for two community spaces are now underway. Parks maintenance crews began work this week at Kidtopia, a longtime favorite playground among downtown locals. While the park has served the community well over the years, it has become increasingly clear that updates are necessary.

Over the past two years, outdated equipment has been gradually removed and replaced, with the large wooden structure being the final component to upgrade due to ongoing safety concerns and the need to meet current accessibility standards. The original Kidtopia structure was a community-built project completed in 2003. It seemed like only yesterday when members of the community, including me, helped paint and assemble the playground.

The newly redesigned playground is expected to be much smaller, featuring a variety of play structures including swings, climbing equipment, and other amenities like seating for children and families. The new playground will be utilized for daytime purposes only.

Southwest Center

Last year, new lighting and HVAC upgrades were the focal point with funding from the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO) EECBG Reimbursable Grant Program.  This year, improvements are underway to enhance the indoor, multi-purpose gymnasium and better serve the community.

The original 55-year-old bleachers were removed earlier this year and will be replaced with modern, mobile bleachers that will offer more flexibility and space. The upgrades will also include a new gym floor installed and designed to support a variety of activities, including basketball, volleyball, and pickleball.

In 2023, the outdoor pickleball and tennis courts underwent major renovations. These upgraded courts now host community leagues such as the Texarkana Pickleball Club and are equipped with lighting to accommodate evening play well after sunset.

The Southwest Center is open to residents Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 7 PM and Saturdays from 9 AM to 6 PM. The Southwest Center features a variety of classes and programs, including yoga, POUND, and barre.
