A suspect has been arrested in connection with the May 10 shooting that killed 21-year-old Jaylen Betts and injured another man on Carroll Street in Texarkana.

Texarkana Texas Police announced Monday that Benjamin Brem, 24, was taken into custody over the weekend down in Houston on multiple warrants issued out of Texarkana. The arrest follows an investigation led by TTPD Detective Casey Schmidt, who worked with Houston authorities to identify and locate the suspect.

The shooting happened just after midnight on May 10 in the 1300 block of Carroll Street. Officers responding to a shots-fired call found Betts inside the residence with  a gunshot wound, he died at the scene. A 52-year-old man was also wounded but survived and was treated at Christus St. Michael for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators determined that more than 50 rounds were fired into the home from the street before the shooter fled the area.

Brem is expected to be extradited back to Texarkana in the coming days, and will be booked into the Bi-State Jail on charges of Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Evading Arrest.

Police credited Detective Schmidt, the department’s investigative team, and Houston law enforcement officers for their work in securing the arrest.
