If you grew up in Texarkana in the 1960s like me, chances are you remember the "Sky Slide" on North State Line Avenue.

The Sky Slide - Texarkana

There weren't many roadside attractions in Texarkana in the past, but in 1968, a businessman named Scott Pavey changed all that by constructing the "Sky Slide" on the Arkansas side of town. I remember how excited I was to have the chance to slide down this gigantic slide, It didn't take much for kids to be amused in those days, after all, there were no cell phones during that era to distract us from having good old-fashioned fun with our family and friends.

I'm sure many families in the Texarkana area spent many weekends making memories on that steel-constructed slide with a black awning cover, built by Mr. Pavey. For those who remember you were given a toad sack when you reached the top, it was used for sliding down the slide, you weren't allowed to slide down without it.

Over the years amusement parks and carnivals have had their version of the "Sky Slide" with a different name and while kids still enjoy sliding down a giant slide, it doesn't quite have the feel as it did back then.

Piece of Texarkana History

Like many things, nothing lasts forever and the infamous "Sky Slide" eventually lost its appeal and shut down, unfortunately, I don't remember when. However, thanks to the Pavey family for giving me and other families in Texarkana fond memories that will last a lifetime.

Please look at this old vintage video below that was shot on an old 8mm film showing the construction of the "Sky Slide" and see how many old stores you recognize are no longer here. For example, A&P Grocery, Gulf Gas Station, and Payless Shoes, where you could buy two pairs of shoes for just $5.00.
