Temporary Water Disinfection Change Begins Sept. 1 in Texarkana
Texarkana Water Utilities (TWU) says the water remains safe to drink, but a chlorine odor may be noticeable.
The Whole Story:
TWU will begin a temporary change in water disinfection procedures starting Monday, September 1, 2025. The process, expected to last about six weeks, will involve switching from the usual chloramine treatment to free chlorine. Officials emphasize the water will remain safe to drink during this time.
The change is part of routine maintenance to help clean out water distribution lines and improve overall water quality. This is not the first time TWU has performed this conversion. Similar procedures have occurred in previous years, most recently in May 2025 and from May to October 2024.
Things You May Notice:
Free chlorine is a more potent disinfectant than chloramine, and while effective, some customers may notice a stronger chlorine smell or slight discoloration in their water. These effects are temporary and should diminish within a couple of weeks.
To support the system during the switch, TWU crews will be flushing fire hydrants more frequently, particularly in areas where water flow is typically lower. This helps ensure the disinfectant reaches all parts of the system evenly.
Dialysis Patients and Aquarium Owners:
Officials also advise dialysis patients to check with their equipment providers to ensure proper filtration. Aquarium owners are encouraged to confirm with their suppliers that their systems can handle free chlorine, although most already do.
Constant Monitoring:
Throughout the process, TWU will monitor water quality and chlorine levels daily to ensure compliance with all state and regulatory standards.
A list of frequently asked questions and more details about the change are available on the TWU website. For specific questions, contact Corey Atkinson, Water Production Manager, or Chris Cagle, Laboratory Supervisor, at 903-798-3850.
