I don't consider Texarkana to be a rural area, but that being said, I do love seeing that our schools and universities are receiving national praise and recognition.

Washington Monthly magazine has named A&M-Texarkana No. 25 on its very first-ever list of the Top 100 Colleges for Rural America. The process started with more than 1,000 colleges and universities in rural areas. Then the list was narrowed down to 100 schools making a difference in their communities.

How Were the Schools Ranked?

The rankings look at more than just academics. All the schools were evaluated on things like admissions, in-state enrollment, financial aid, student loan debt, alumni earnings and the percentage of graduates who stay in their home state.

The colleges were also looked at for the number of degrees they offered in fields that are especially important to rural communities, including teaching, nursing, engineering, agriculture and natural resource management.

It's also pretty cool to see that out of the 50 schools on the list, 10 of them are in Texas!

Preparing Students for the Future

A&M-Texarkana President Dr. Ross Alexander said the recognition reflects the university’s commitment to providing affordable education. They also focus on preparing students for in-demand careers and helping the region grow.

And yes, as you can see, our area has been growing by leaps and bounds.

Texas A&M University-Texarkana offers more than 50 academic programs at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. Many programs can also be completed entirely online, giving students more flexibility as they work toward their degrees.

I'm so proud and happy to see how Texarkana is taking some bows on the big stage; it's about time!
