There are a few standouts in the Justice League trailer (aside from Zack Snyder’s glaring obsession with making audiences feel like they’re trapped in a 2001 NuMetal music video): Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen / The Flash, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman — all of whom inject the trailer with enough personality to make up for Ben Affleck’s affectless Batman. Momoa’s humorously gruff take on Aquaman is a pleasant surprise, and it’s really piqued our interest in his upcoming solo film from director James Wan, which has officially begun production.

Wan shared the first photo from the set of Aquaman, which is filming under the production title Ahab. The main focus of the pic is the camera and slate, but then there’s the actual set, which resembles the inside of a submarine — and judging by the consoles, this one might be from an earlier decade:

Warner Bros. has also unveiled a brand-new, shiny logo for Aquaman, which you probably already noticed at the top of this post. The retro vibe is definitely a departure from Justice League’s hard rock aesthetic. Here’s the full, high-res version, in case you need a new desktop wallpaper or something:

In addition, WB sent out a press release announcing the start of production and confirming the film’s main cast: Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Patrick Wilson as Orm / Ocean Master, and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna.

Aquaman is set to hit theaters in 2018.
