Arkansas Auditor of State Dennis Milligan oversees the state’s unclaimed property program known as the Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt, has successfully located more than $115,000 in unclaimed funds for nonprofit organizations across the state.

"In anticipation of National Nonprofit Day, I directed my team to focus on identifying unclaimed property belonging to nonprofits within Arkansas," said Milligan. "Through our search on ClaimItAR.gov, we identified over $115,000 that rightfully belongs to nonprofits serving our communities."

Milligan noted that letters were sent on August 7 to several nonprofits across the state, informing them of their unclaimed assets.

To commemorate National Nonprofit Day on August 17, Milligan personally delivered a check for $40,858.10 to the United Methodist Children’s Home in Little Rock on August 13.

"We’re committed to ensuring that Arkansas nonprofits receive their unclaimed funds," Milligan added. "I encourage all organizations to check our unclaimed property database at www.ClaimItAR.gov to see if they have any money waiting to be claimed."

Unclaimed property can include a variety of financial accounts, such as abandoned checking or savings accounts, unreturned utility deposits, overpayments, life insurance proceeds, and even stock or mutual fund shares. In some cases, it may also include tangible items left behind in safe deposit boxes.

Milligan explained that when accounts are abandoned, often due to a move or a death, and the original holder (such as a bank or utility company) cannot locate the owner, the assets are classified as “unclaimed” and are submitted to his office.

"Milligan says that by state law, he must return these unclaimed funds to their rightful owners. Since taking office in January 2023, his office has returned more than $52 million to Arkansans through the Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt.
