Ashdown High School Senior Kasey Barton has received the F.S. Root Memorial Scholarship from the Arkansas PTA.  Arkansas PTA offers scholarships to graduating seniors to help them pursue their teaching degrees.  Kasey was one of only two students to receive an Arkansas PTA scholarship in the state.

According to an Arkansas PTA News Release, “The scholarship program allows Arkansas PTA to help in the recruitment of quality teachers for all Arkansas students,” said president Melinda Kinnison, “as well as support existing teachers in pursuing higher degrees.”

The Arkansas PTA scholarship program is funded through Arkansas PTA Lifetime Memberships, which are used to recognize outstanding PTA volunteers at the local, council and state level; through the sale of memberships to the Diamond State PTA, which is a state-wide unit; and through direct contributions, memorials and honorariums.  100% of these proceeds are contributed to the scholarship fund.  Applicants are requested to submit an essay and three references prior to February 1 for consideration.

Kasey plans to attend Cossatot Community College for her associate's degree, then transfer to Texas A & M University in Texarkana to obtain her K-6 Education Degree.  She plans to work as a substitute teacher to help gain experience in the field of education.  As a student at AHS, she was a member of the National BETA Club and the National Honor Society. She was also part of the first set of Teacher Cadets in Ashdown High School's Teacher Cadet Program.
