Before classes begin, an orientation session will be held on Thursday, August 27. Interns will then complete 55 hours of training, including 35 hours of virtual instruction and 20 hours of in-person classes. Participants must also complete an online volunteer introduction course and pass a criminal background check before starting the program.

Master Gardeners receive specialized horticulture training through the Bowie County Extension Office and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. In return, they volunteer their time to help with educational programs and projects that benefit the community.

After the training, interns must pass an examination and complete at least 50 hours of volunteer service on AgriLife-sponsored projects in Bowie County within one year to become certified. Certified Master Gardeners are then required to complete continuing education and volunteer service hours each year to maintain their certification.
