Story Behind the Song: Dustin Lynch, ‘Small Town Boy’
Dustin Lynch's single "Small Town Boy" is the second tune from a yet-to-be-released third studio album. Written by Rhett Akins, Ben Hayslip and Kyle Fishman, the song spoke to Lynch because of his rural upbringing, in Tullahoma, Tenn. Even though it's one of only a few songs on his next record that Lynch didn't write, it resonated with him as much as if he did write it.
Below, Lynch recalls for The Boot and other reporters the day he decided to record "Small Town Boy," and include it on his third album.
It’s a song that I heard rolling down the road … I heard "Small Town Boy" right after Thanksgiving or Christmas break a couple years ago. I’ll say, I heard it then because Rhett, Ben and Kyle wrote it on the Farm Tour -- the Luke Bryan Tour -- which is usually October-ish. So, probably, I think it was November they sent it to me.
I was actually going to deer hunt. I remember hearing it and then getting to my hunting lease, and the whole time I’m sitting in the tree stand, I’m like, "Man, I can’t wait to get back and listen to that song again.” On the way home, I was playing it over and over, and I was like, “Man, this is really special and cool.”
It’s looking like it’s going to be our quickest-rising single to date, and it’s really going to do big things for us. I’m pretty excited to go into Summer 2017 with it.
