Dwayne Johnson Confirms a ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ Sequel Is In the Works
Anyone could’ve told you months ago that we’d be getting a third Jumanji movie. Last year’s sequel to the 1995 original was a massive hit, so massive that it topped Titanic‘s box office record, spent three consecutive weekends at number one, and just this week, beat out the original 2002 Spider-Man and more as Sony Picture’s biggest domestic film, ever. And all after opening against a new Star Wars. So yeah, it’s no surprise that The Rock has confirmed a Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sequel is already in the works.
While on the Rampage press tour, Dwayne Johnson took to Instagram yesterday to thank his fans for shelling out their cash to see him and his biceps traverse a dangerous video game jungle. “As producer of Jumanji, we are working on the sequel right now,” he said in the video. “And speaking of giving the audience what they want, I’m going to go ahead and kill Kevin Hart’s character off for good.”
While rumors have told us a sequel to the Welcome to the Jungle was happening for months now, this is the first official word from The Rock that it’s in development. Karan Gillan, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart are all said to return, and the film’s screenwriting team, Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, will pen the sequel.
Welcome to the Jungle followed four high schoolers who were transported into the Jumanji game, converted to a video game instead of the original board game, and forced to survive as various avatars. While the virtual world was set in a jungle, there’s plenty of opportunity for a sequel to jump to an all new location. Jumanji: Welcome to the Arctic where Kevin Hart complains about the cold the whole time? Jumanji: Welcome to Ancient Rome where The Rock battles gladiators? Anything’s possible. The Jumanji sequel will likely hit theaters in December of 2019, going head-to-head with Star Wars yet again.
