Local 4-H Students Win Honors With Bowie County Forestry Team
The Bowie County 4-H Forestry Team has been very busy. Last week they competed in the Red River Army Depot Forestry Invitational on March 21, – Laura Fincher was 5th high individual. This week they competed in the Bowie County Soil and Water Conservation District Field Day. Laura was 1st high individual in the forestry contest. The team of Laura Fincher, Jaycie May and Carter May were high 4-H team and 5th high team overall.
In the forestry contest the contestants have to display skills in compass and pacing, determining board feet in a live tree to determine the total volume of a select group of trees, identify hardwoods and pines as well as wood products including site regeneration and site management, cull tree removal and understand the relationship between timber, forage and wildlife.
Needless to say, Forestry competition is very in-depth."The kids have worked hard in preparing for this contest," said, County Coordinator Cherrie Curtis of the CEA-4H Youth Development.
